Explore data with Observable
This was a side project following my PhD defense where I wanted to explore what the Observable Framework could offer in terms of visualization and speed.
I had a R Shiny app that was actually perfectly working for the exact same purpose, that is showing float trajectories and explore particles data (i.e., particle concentrations measured by an underwater camera, particle size spectra and total carbon fluxes derived from an optical sediment trap).
However, it was slow.
It was slow because the data processing was done on the fly therefore it could take some time before getting the updated plot which made the user experience horrible.
As a solution, I chose to experiment data loaders with Observable which processes all data at build time, combined with some SQL and duckDB under the hood to reach a usable app.
